According to Fakt, DJ Carey was an icon of Irish hurling for years, a traditional team sport that combines elements of lacrosse, field hockey and baseball. His sporting achievements earned him fame and respect among fans and the sports community. Even after retiring in 2006, Carey continued to enjoy star status.

However, the man defrauded people between 2014 and 2022. He claimed that he was struggling with cancer and extorted money in various fundraisers. In addition, a photo appeared on social media recently, which Carey sent to his victims. It was supposed to be "proof" of his alleged health condition. The fact explains that the aforementioned photo shows the athlete lying in bed with a phone cable, a plaster stuck to his nose.

The man appeared in court for the first time in 2023, where he was charged with 21 counts of fraud and theft. In early July this year - as reported by Fakt - the 54-year-old admitted to 10 of them. The verdict is to be announced on October 29.
